In honor of the Swedish immigrant population who settled in Norwood in the late 1800s, some of whom founded Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 1898, and as part of the town’s 150th Anniversary Emmanuel will be hosting a Luciafest on December 11th at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Emmanuel is located at 24 Berwick Street, Norwood.
A Luciafest is a celebration of Saint Lucia, who is honored in Sweden as a bringer of light in the darkest part of the year and a model of generosity. In Sweden, Saint Lucia’s Day (December 13th) is recognized as the beginning of the Christmas season.
The event will include a Lucia pageant in our Sanctuary, which will consist of the telling of the story of Saint Lucia and some traditional Swedish music, followed by a reception of Swedish baked goods and a display of that highlights the history of Emmanuel, Swedesville, and the town of Norwood. The reception will be held in Emmanuel’s Kask Hall.
